Notice is hereby given that a vote of the Town of Morden will be taken to elect Mayor & Councillors from the following duly nominated candidates:

VOTING PLACES

Voting places will be open for voting on Wednesday the 27th day of October 2010 between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. at: Morden Community Centre.

IDENTIFICATION MAY BE REQUIRED BEFORE BEING ALLOWED TO VOTE.  A person may be required to produce one piece of government issued photo identification (for example – driver’s license or passport) or at least two other documents that provide proof of identity.

ADVANCE VOTING

For the purpose of accommodating persons who are qualified to vote, but who have reason to believe that they will be absent or otherwise unable to attend their proper voting place on election day, an advance voting opportunity will be located at Morden Friendship Centre and will be open on the following day, Friday, October 22nd, 2010 between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

MOBILE VOTING

For the purpose of accommodating persons who are qualified to vote, but reside at a health care facility, a mobile voting station will be set up at the following health care facilities on election day.

  1. Tabor Home – 230–9th Street South
  2. Boundary Trails Health Centre – Pth #3 & #14
  3. Legion House 1 & 2 – 265–275 North Railway Street.

APPLICATION TO VOTE BY SEALED ENVELOPE

A voter who is unable to go in person to the voting place or vote in advance, may apply in person, in writing, or by fax to the senior election official at 195 Stephen Street, Fax: 822-6494.

If applying in person*, a voter may apply between October 4th and October 20th.
*A voter applying in person may pick up a sealed envelope ballot package at the time of application.

If applying by mail or fax **, a voter may apply between September 29th and October 15th.
**A voter applying by mail of fax will receive a sealed envelope ballot package by regular post, or by making alternative arrangements with the senior election official.

ADDITIONS TO THE VOTERS LIST AND/OR PERSONAL SECURITY PROTECTION REQUESTS


In accordance with the Municipal Councils and School Boards Election Act, The Town of Morden Voters List is open for changes or revisions.
  • Any person who is eligible to vote in municipal elections in the Town of Morden can have her/his name added to the Voters List, or have any information about the voter on the Voters List Corrected.
  • Any person can request to have her/his name and address obscured from the Voters List.
A person whose name has been obscured will receive a Personal Security Certificate and identification number. In a civic election, that person may vote only by Sealed Envelope Ballot and cannot vote in person at the regular or advance voting places.

CANDIDATE ORIENTATION SESSION Morden Council Chambers

This session was for individuals who wanted to have some sense of what a person is getting into when agreeing to be a candidate for Morden Council. How often do meetings take place? What responsibilities will I have? How much (or little) am I compensated for all my time? An orientation session took place on September 1st, 2010 in the Council Chambers. The presentation includes topics such as legislative requirements, roles of Council and administration, time commitments, how the Town operates, and compensation for Council positions.

NOTICE OF NOMINATIONS - TOWN OF MORDEN

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on the following days:

September 15, 16, 17, 20, 21 during regular office hours at the Morden Town Offices,
195 Stephen Street, Morden MB, nominations will be received for the offices of Mayor and (6) Councillors for the Town of Morden.

The nomination deadline is September 21, 2010 at 4:30 P.M. Nominations cannot be accepted after this day. It is to be noted that this is also the deadline for the filing of candidate registrations.

All nominations shall be made in writing on the prescribed form and shall be signed by not less than 25 eligible voters of the authority. Each nomination must also be accompanied by the candidate's declaration of qualification.

Nominations may be filed in person at the above location, on the dates and hours specified, by an agent or by faxing to 204.822.6494.

Nomination papers not accompanied by the required documents or not properly filed will be rejected.

Nomination papers and the required documents may be picked up at the Morden Town Offices during regular office hours beginning August 30, 2010.

CAMPAIGN REGISTRATION PERIOD

The campaign and registration period for candidates for the position of COUNCILLOR for the Town of Morden begins June 30, 2010.

Forms and information may be picked up at the Town of Morden Administration Office, 195 Stephen St., during regular office hours beginning June 30, 2010.

2010 MORDEN ENUMERATION

Enumeration for preparation of the Voters List for the October 27, 2010 election of Mayor and Councillors for the Town of Morden will begin on May 26th, 2010 and continue for approximately 3 weeks. You will be contacted by an enumerator to ensure that your name and address appears correctly on the Voters List.

If you are not at home when the enumerator calls, a note will be left in your mail box. The note will have the name and phone number of your enumerator. Please call with your information as soon as possible. Your co-operation is greatly appreciated.

Manitoba Government Election Information

Elections Every Four Years

Elections in local authorities are held every four years on the fourth Wednesday in October. The next election will take place in October 2010.

Last Elections

In 2006, our last election year, the Town of Morden went to the polls to elect a Mayor and six Councillors on October 25, 2006. A door-to-door enumeration to update the voters list was conducted. Click here for the results.

Eligibility to Vote

To be eligible to vote, one must be a Canadian citizen at least 18 years of age and be a resident of or own property in the town for at least six months prior to the date of the election. If you are missed during enumeration, this does not mean that you cannot vote. A date will be advertised when you can examine your information on the Voters List. You may also register at the polls on the day of the election. You must present identification in order to register.

Personal Security Protection

Voters requiring Personal Security Protection may apply to the Senior Election Official (SEO) to have their name obscured from the Voters List. Such persons will be required to apply to the SEO who will assign them a Personal Security Certificate and a voting number. Physical Disablility

Voters who cannot make it to the polls due to a physical disability, may apply to the SEO to vote at home.Full-time caregivers of disabled people may also apply to be considered Homebound Voters.In these instances, the SEO will contact the individuals and make arrangements for them to vote in their homes.

Eligibility to be a Candidate

To qualify to be nominated as a candidate, a person must be a Canadian citizen at least 18 years of age, and must be a resident of or own property in the Town of Morden for at least six months prior to the date of the election. The nomination period begins on the 42nd day before the election and ends on the 36th day before the election.For 2006, these dates were September 13th and September 19th. All nominations must be supported by at least 25 names of eligible voters whose names appear on the Voters List.Candidates are advised to provide more than 25 names to ensure that at least 25 can be verified. Advance Polls

Advance polls are held approximately one week prior to the election.Anyone may vote at the advance polls.

Voting Polls

On voting day all polls are located at the Morden Recreation Complex.A Moving Poll will visit Boundary Trails Health Centre, Legion House 1 & 2, and Tabor Home and Apartments, to facilitate voting for these residents.
