Snow Removal

Winter is a beautiful time of year in Morden, but we can get a lot of snow! It is important to understand the process. Morden Downtown Snow Scene

Public Notice - April 20th, 2010

The Overnight Parking Ban is now considered LIFTED until the first snowfall of Fall 2010.  We thank you for your cooperation over the past winter regarding this ban.

Issued pursuant to Town of Morden By-law Nos. 5-2007 and15-2006.

OVERNIGHT PARKING BAN

Please do not park on the streets. This will assist in the snow clearing operation. If you do park on the street you may get a parking ticket OR your car will be surrounded by snow. Each year the "Overnight Parking Ban" takes effect on the first snowfall and everyone is asked not to park on the streets between the hours of 12:00 Midnight and 8:00 AM.

Why don't the driveways get cleared when the streets are cleared?

From time to time the office receives requests to have driveways cleared during the regular snow removal process. Working with our present equipment and manpower, general snow clearing would then take two to three days longer to complete. After heavier snowfalls, the process would be even longer. To provide snow removal service while clearing the streets would require an increase of equipment, extra staff OR contracting out of equipment and labour. These measures would come as a significant increase in cost to the taxpayers.

As a means to maintain an affordable mill rate, the Town has maintained it's present format for snow removal. Our number one goal is still to provide safe and passable streets for the general public as quickly and consistently as possible.

How Can You Help?

When the snow comes as it does every winter, the aim of the Morden Public Works Department is to have the whole Town cleared in a day. To do this they need your help. There are a few things that everyone can do to help speed up the process. They are;

  • Please do not park on the streets. See By-Law 35-2007 (Traffic Control By-Law)

  • Please do not call the Councillors or the Civic Centre with snow removal issues - call the hot line at Public Works on 822-5119

  • For safety reasons, you may not push snow onto the street. If you do, the Town will charge you the cost for removal of the snow. ( SeeBy-Law 5-2007) (Obstructions Municipal Roads By-Law)

What is the Snow Removal Procedure?

Everyone seems to want to know when their section of Town will be cleared. There is a basic procedure that the team follows;

  1. Main thoroughfares are cleared first, such as Stephen Street, North & South Railway, Downtown business section and main collector streets such as Wardrop Street, and Gilmour Street. The Provincial Highways department clears Thornhill Street and Mountain Street. (#432)

  2. Streets going North/South are then done starting at the East side of Town. Public Works strive to open all the streets in the most time efficient manner possible.

  3. Main school sidewalks are done immediately after street plowing.

  4. Windrowing and hauling of business sections are done after initial plowing has been done.

  5. Fire hydrants are cleared later as time permits.

  6. After plowing is done salt sand is applied on all intersections. Clean-up of cul-de-sacs, intersections and other areas are done as time permits. Patience by all is appreciated.
