HELP OUR COMMUNITY SKATE THROUGH THE WINTER HOLIDAYS
The Town of Morden would like to continue offering free skating over the winter break so we can all stay active. We need a skate patrol to ensure public skating is safe for everyone. To make this feasible, we require volunteer skate patrols for the time listed below. To volunteer as skate patrol, please contact the Community Services Office at 822-5431.
Dec. 23, 28 & 30 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm
Dec. 29 from 2:30 – 4:00 pm
Dec. 24 & 31 from 12:00 – 2:00 pm
40 ACRES OF RECREATIONAL SPACE – ANOTHER STEP CLOSER
Have you ever had to develop 40 acres of recreational space? How would you ensure proper drainage, the safe spacing of sports fields, adequate parking and room for future development? Hmmmmm! That’s why we’ve hired Scattliff + Miller + Murray Architects to assist us! After consulting with the Community Services Department and gathering feedback from potential user groups, they will provide a conceptual drawing laying out the grounds along with a preliminary cost estimate. We will ensure this information is shared with the community as it is developed.
MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK
The Budzz Hockey Club and Morden Minor Hockey volunteers lent a helping hand at the Community Centre and had fun doing it. Thanks to their support, the hockey locker area in the basement of the West Arena has been improved. Chain link locker storage was constructed to improve air circulation and provide better protection by the sprinkler system. Minor hockey teams will store their team jerseys and miscellaneous equipment in these lockers. An office area was also developed for the minor hockey program to improve their equipment inventory process and the operation of their organization.
NICE T.V.!
The big screen television at the Community Services Office has been donated by Morden men’s recreation hockey teams: A Few Good Men, The Budzz, The Knuckles, and The Swaybacks and supplied by Heartland Computers (Wayne Rankin). Enjoy watching sports and the Olympic Games while waiting for your child’s activities to begin. Thank You!!
IMPROVE SITELINES FOR DRIVERS - TRIMMING OF TREES & SHRUBS
To ensure safe sidewalks and sightlines for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic, we are requesting the cooperation of affected property owners in maintaining trees and/or shrubs. Tree branches hanging over the sidewalks must be trimmed to a height of at least 8 feet above the sidewalk and 15 feet above roadways. Trees, bushes, shrubs and other vegetation should be kept trimmed at least 12 inches back from the edge of the sidewalk. Along with allowing motorists and pedestrians to see clearly when approaching a corner, this also allows the Public Works personnel to clean the sidewalks appropriately in the snowy months.
If it becomes necessary, the Town of Morden reserves the right to trim and/or remove any growth from private trees or shrubs that extends onto public right of ways. The costs for the Town to perform this work will remain the responsibility of the property owner. (Town Policy C/S-004)
OH WHERE OH WHERE HAVE THE DOG LICENSES GONE?
Town of Morden dog licenses are available from the By-Law Officer located at the Morden Community Centre, 111 Gilmour Street. Starting January 1, 2010, all information and regulations regarding dogs will be at this location rather than the Town Civic Centre.
DINING ROOM LIQUOR LICENSE
Organizing an event in our facility just got easier for those wanting to serve alcohol with their meals. The Community Services Department has obtained a dining room liquor license.
Now people organizing events that include a meal have the option of using the facility license or applying for their own Occasional Permit. When the facility license is used, the Community Services Department will look after the ordering and supplying of liquor for the event and you will be charged per usage. Those who choose to apply for their own license will continue to be responsible for ordering, picking up and returning the alcohol. When booking your event, please discuss your license options with the Program Coordinator.
MANITOBA HOMECOMING - WHO ARE YOU INVITING HOME IN 2010?
Morden was one of five finalists in the bid to host Manitoba’s 140th birthday party for next year. We were selected and awarded $5000 to host a local celebration. Mark your calendars for May 12, 2010!
Ever want to be part of a world record? The Manitoba Homecoming initiative is encouraging all Manitoba communities to host a social on May 15, 2010. Morden will be doing its part to make this happen by hosting two socials at the Community Centre at the same time! Along with the other small towns in Manitoba, we will be hosting the world’s largest social. With tow different styles of music and dancing, we hope to appeal to a variety of people. Get your dancing shoes ready! Click here for more information.
