Social Insurance Number

A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is your personal identification number issued by the Government of Canada. You need to have a Social Insurance Number to work in Canada. It can also help you to open a bank account and cash cheques. To apply for a SIN you will need to take one of the following documents to the Service Canada Centre located at 158 Stephen Street.

  • Canada Immigration Record and Visa or Record of Landing (IMM 1000)
  • Visitor Record, Employment Authorization or Minister's Permit Extension (IMM 1442 or equivalent)
  • Refugee Status Claim (IMM 1434)

While you are waiting for your Social Insurance Number to arrive you may still apply for jobs by showing a copy of your application.

Tips For Finding A Job

  • Newspapers: Some job openings are advertised in the classified section of the local newspapers. Visit www.mordentimes.com or www.winklermordenvoice.ca
  • Service Canada: There is a computerized Job Bank system at the Serivce Canada office located at 158 Stephen Street. They can assist you with your job search.
  • Internet Listings: Visit www.localjobshop.ca where jobs for Morden, Winkler and Altona are listed.

  • Direct Contact: You many also approach businesses directly with your resume, or fill out one of their company application forms.
  • Internet Research: Many companies have a website and it is always a good idea to do research via the internet. These companies will post vacancies on their website. When applying to a job that you have found on the internet, you may want to mention you found the opening on their website - it shows that you ahve done research for the job and about the company.
