Pets & Emergency Preparedness

The following are a few tips for caring for pets in an emergency;

  • When preparing your emergency supplies kit, include items for your pets such as : Three-day supply of food; kitty litter; medications; and food and water dispensers.
  • Use a pet carrier that allows your pet to stand up and turn around inside.
  • If you have made plans to evacuate to the home of a friend or family, ask if you can bring your pets.
  • If your pets need medication or special diets, ask your veterinarian for suggestions on what to do if you have to leave for several days. Keep an extra supply of food and medications on hnad. You may ask your veterinarian if they will take pets in an emergency.
  • Keep your pet’s shots current and know where their records are.
  • If, as a last resort, you have to leave pets behind, have a plan to ensure their care. They are safest indoors, protected from the elements with a supply of food and water.
