Pembina Hills Arts Council & Centre
The Pembina Hills Arts Council began in 1988 with a group of nine artists from the Morden area showing their art as part of the Morden Corn and Apple Festival. The group continued to exhibit their work three times a year, finding display space in a variety of empty buildings in Morden. In 1996 the group moved into its permanent home in one of Morden's heritage buildings. In March 1992, the group became incorporated and the first board of directors was elected. The goal was to draw together formerly isolated artists in South Central Manitoba and provide display space for their work. In 1996, it became clear that a paid co-ordinator was needed for the daily operation of the Centre and the first employee was hired. Fundraising events for the Pembina Hills Arts Council and Centre have included Victorian Teas, Oktoberfest Beer Tasting, Wine Tasting, Concerts, and Heritage Building Tours. Heritage Building Tours educate the public about the artistry inherent in these buildings. The Artists began teaching classes in basic drawing and silk painting in 1994. Since then more classes have been added including watercolour, stained glass, wood carving, porcelain doll making, pottery, cartooning, and children's art and craft classes. The Pembina Hills Arts Council and Centre hosts a different exhibition each month. The work displayed is from talented artists in the region as well as some successful Manitoba artists. Annual exhibitions include the Central Region Juried Art Show and the Members-only Art Exhibition. Another annual event is the Back 40 Folk Festival held the first Sunday in June. The mandate of the Pembina Hills Arts Council and Centre is
To promote and encourage participation, growth and appreciation of the arts for all ages; and
To provide and develop mutual support for all its members.
