Morden Skatepark Phase Two Overcoming Hurdles

Provincial Funding Makes Expansion Possible

Date – July 26, 2018

MORDEN, MB –A $50,000 grant from the Province removed the final barrier to the Morden skatepark’s phase two expansion becoming a reality.

The announcement was made Friday, July 20 when Finance Minister Cameron Friesen called Wes Reimer, former chair of the skatepark committee, to personally share the good news.

“I was sitting in my chair relaxing, then I got the call,” said Reimer.

“I was just elated, he said. “It brought validation to what we did as a community. It takes a lot of people to make something happen. Doing things together in community is very powerful.”

The City of Morden had been applying for external funding for the skatepark for the past three years, but each application was denied.

“It’s been discouraging at times,” said Community Services and Events Manager, Clare Agnew. “We had done so much fundraising and gathering support for this expansion, external funding was the final piece of the puzzle.”

“Now that the grant has been approved,” she added, “we can complete the plans we’ve been wanting for the past few years. We’re very excited to provide an even better experience for the athletes who will be using this space.”

Reimer had overseen fundraising for the phase two expansion but had to back out in 2016 due to health concerns.

“It was a very difficult decision for me,” remarked Reimer. “I was very passionate about this because it was a connection between myself and my son, who is a skateboarder, and the kids in the community who needed this expansion.”

The new section being added to the skatepark will include several jumps and ramps, an area for less experienced skateboarders, and an outdoor ping-pong table donated by Imperia Management.

Community funding groups include the Morden Area Foundation and the Morden Collegiate’s Youth in Philanthropy team.
