The Breakfast Club is a FREE program designed to help young hockey players of all ages and levels increase their puck handling skills. This initiative is organized by local volunteers and runs every Wednesday from 7am-8am starting in November through February at the Morden Access Event Centre. The hour of on ice instruction is followed by a FREE breakfast for participants before the kids head off to school. The ice is donated by the City of Morden and the food is supplied in partnership by Giant Tiger, Morden Minor Hockey Association, the Budzz Hockey Team and the Greenleafs Hockey Team. Parent Volunteers prepare the food, while the kids are on the ice, serve the breakfast and help clean up.
The on-ice instruction is lead by Brian McElroy and Gerry Leiding. “For me, my drive comes from the fact these kids look forward to come out for a 7am ice time with a great attitude and a smile on their face. I also see continuous improvement from start to finish. Parents tell us that it’s the only morning they don’t have to work at getting them up “Gerry Leiding Coach Mentor and Breakfast Club Instructor.
The ice is split up into age groups which allow the kids to play and practice with similar aged kids. The skill development drills include puck control, passing and receiving, and shooting. An 8 year old participant was asked what his favorite part of breakfast club was, and replied “um the breakfast…….and playing games but I really like the breakfast”.
“It’s great to see a variety of kids from minor hockey, the recreation hockey program, and kids just wanting to give hockey a try participating in the Breakfast Club Program.” Shawn Dias, on-ice volunteer.
Throughout the year the Morden Breakfast Club Program had an average of 30 participants and welcomes continued support from this year’s participants and encourages others to come out next year!
