What They Do and Why They Chose Morden
The 3M Canada Company
The 3M Canada Company - Morden facility began operations in 1982 with the manufacturing of "Scotchkote". In 1986 the plant expanded in order to accommodate health care products manufacturing. The Morden plant underwent further expansions in 1992, 1999/2000 and 2006 to provide for increased capacity.
The 3M Morden plant specializes in the production of ScotchkoteT epoxy resin powders for pipe and re-bar coatings. This facility also manufactures health care products, Red DotT monitoring electrodes, surgical dressings, molded masks, and TransporeT and MicroporeT surgical tapes. Most of 3M Morden's production is for the Canadian market but the firm also exports to the United States, and around the world.
"The company had been based in Ontario and wanted a western presence in a town of under 15,000 population. Morden had a very well maintained industrial park with good railway access and a good pool of semi-skilled workers."
Buhler Manufacturing (Farm King) - Agriculture Equipment Manufacturer
Buhler Manufacturing was established in 1932 and operated as Standard Gas Engine Works until the Company was purchased by John Buhler in 1969. The Company has since grown to become a significant player in the farm equipment industry. In the early 70’s it started to grow from a company with annual sales of approximately $200,000 to its present corporate sales of approximately $175 million.
Today, the Company operates three manufacturing plants and ten distribution centers and employing over 800 people. The Company remains strongly committed to its core business as a manufacturer of a wide range of agriculture equipment. In 2000, the Company purchased the only tractor manufacturing plant in Canada. Ranging from 145 hp to 536 hp, the tractors became the perfect compliment to the Company’s long standing portfolio of short line farm equipment, which includes grain augers, front-end loaders, mowers, tillers, rear blades, snow blowers, rollermills, hammermills, conveyors and haying equipment.
Buhler Manufacturing has excess production capabilities and has excellent capabilities in fabrication, machining, painting and assembly. The Company distributes its products through a dealer and distribution network across North America. The work force, strong work ethic, close locations to the U.S. and good support from the Town were cited as factors determining the location in Morden.
Huron Window Corporation - Window/Door Manufacturer
Huron Window Corporation was established in 1980 as a manufacturer of insulating glass. The business grew and led to the design of Huron PVC windows in 1981-82. Huron window designs are manufactured exclusively by Huron Window Corp. and "Huron" is a registered trade name in Canada and the U.S.A. The company specializes in the production of PVC window systems including awning, casement, picture, bay, and slider windows. They also manufacture insulated steel entrance doors. Huron products are sold exclusively through established building supply centers and glass shops. The company's current sales territory is Canada and covers Ontario to British Columbia. The company purchases hardware, weather stripping, and glass from outside suppliers.
"Morden has a good labour force and recreation facilities for staff. The Town Council is to be commended for its support of business."
Decor Cabinets Ltd. - Cabinet Manufacturing
Decor Cabinets was established in 1977 in the small southern Manitoba city of Portage la Prairie. In a facility less than 4,000 square feet, four employees produced the face-framed cabinets common to the cabinet industry at that time. Due to customer demand for a product with greater versatility and style, a decision was made to shift production to full access cabinets. This change in design triggered a surge in the growth rate of Decor Cabinets that continues to this day.
In 1990, Decor seized an opportunity to relocate to a 32,000 square foot plant in Morden, Manitoba. Presently, Decor is among the top twenty fastest growing companies in the province. Over the course of the last few years, Decor has expanded its facilities a number of times. Production space now stands at a total of 146,000 square feet while recently renovated office space includes a 4,000 square foot state-of-the art showroom.
Good relationships with our dealers and a personal approach to working with customers solidified our growing presence in the marketplace. The demand for our many styles and creative finishes has opened up new opportunities for marketing as we constantly strive to remain on the cutting edge of technology and design.
With Decor Cabinet's creative finishes, the company services a niche market in the Kitchen and Bath industry that continues to expand. Glazing, Chalk and Furniture finishing are just some of the latest staining techniques. While other finishes such as distressing, stainless steal inserts and linen textures have the industry racing to find the latest technique. Our finishing department creates many of these unique looks through careful hand processes that show our dedication to quality is second to none.
Decor Cabinets celebrates over 25 years of business success. This milestone is a tribute to the hard work of our employees. Over the years, Decor has realized that the success of the company hinges on the development and training of employees. Knowing that a knowledgeable and skilled staff is vital to our growing business, we have poured our energies and resources into their training. We are working diligently to create a work environment where our employees will find enjoyment and significance in the workplace. Our aim is to continue to be an employer of choice in our community.
